Check the surrounding area for any objects that can injure you if you fall on them such as random toys, edges or tables or fireplaces.

Using the board on a carpet will slow down the board a bit making it easier to use, the thicker the carpet, the slower the board will react.

Use equipment like bike helmets, skateboarding knee, wrist and elbow pads.

Using a Balance board close to a wall can help when first learning.  You can keep your hands posted on the wall while rocking back and forth on the board to get familiar with it.

When you build up some more balance skills, you can keep a tall chair or a 3 to 6 ft. (91 to 182 cm)  ladder next to the balance board to give yourself something to grab onto if you feel like your going to fall.

Although this is not foolproof, you can still fall onto the ladder and get injured or to add insult to injury have the ladder fall on top of you after you have fallen off the balance board.

Another option would be to hang some ropes overhead so you can grab onto them while practicing or if you lose your balance.
